The data on gender violence in Mexico are heartbreaking. Every day nine women are killed in Mexico. Six out of 10 Mexicans women have been victims of some episode of violence throughout their lives, 41.3% have been victims of sexual assault. These ara database from the Attention to Women Center in Playa del Carmen (CAM), an institute that watches over women’s rights and the prevention of violence through non-violent conflict resolution. Through legal support and accompaniment to the State Prosecutor’s Office of Quintana Roo, it also monitors and supports women through group and individual psychological therapies. Yoga Without Borders, we believe that yoga is an essential tool for female empowerment, so we offer free classes for all users of the center.
YOGA BENEFIT WOMEN WHO HAVE SUFFERED GENDER VIOLENCE
Yoga and meditation can relieve the symptoms of depression and stress of women at risk of social exclusion.
– Relaxation
Women who have suffered gender violence have to deal with high stress levels in their lives. It has been shown that yoga can help cope with problems through meditation and the practice of different positions and exercises, as well as relax the body and mind.
-Flexibility
From the age of 40, women’s flexibility decreases considerably, yoga is characterized by increasing flexibility and increasing the conditioning of joints, tendons and ligaments, helping to avoid injuries and have better health.
– Social integration
Yoga group practice allows to interact with other people who have similar situations.
– Capacity of concentration
Meditation and yoga exercises increase the ability to concentrate, allowing women to be more productive in their different activities.
Yoga helps to balance a woman’s endocrine system and softening period pains or hormonal changes caused by menstruation or menopause.
– Self esteem
One of the main benefits of yoga is the ability to calm down the mind and also the ability to identify negative thoughts. Learning to connect with the present significantly decreases anxiety and depression. Feelings of empathy, relaxation and gratitude are experienced, helping develop compassion or sorority, thus generating greater self-esteem and confidence in herself.
